My favorite thing about VIScon

It’s something that you can’t learn in lectures and shows real world computer science. Especially since during the last VIScon we realized how much is out there and how much can be seen.

What is my job at the OK?

As the president I try to keep the overview about every small task that needs to be done in order to make VIScon the awesome event it will be. I also try to jump in if any of the other OK members needs support. Besides that I do a lot of representative tasks for VIScon and try to share the enthusiasm I feel about it with others.

Why did I join the OK?

I want to ensure that VIScon stays awesome - after the huge success of VIScon 2018 I wanted to write down everything that needs to be done and learn from the first iteration in order to lay the foundations for many more VIScons to come.

My favorite thing about VIScon

Our sponsors and their commitment to enable such an amazing event for the students.

What is my job at the OK?

Being responsible for the sponsoring of VIScon means that I enable the organizing committee financially to organize the best VIScon possible. I am just as committed to making sure VIScon is as great as an experience for our sponsors as for the participants.

Why did I join the OK?

Not only was I part of the bunch that came up with the idea, but I also saw this as an opportunity to apply my extracurricular knowledge and skills for the benefit of all computer science students.

My favorite thing about VIScon

It is an event that students love and one they are able to profit from in many ways. Unlike usual company fairs, VIScon is a unique opportunity for students to get in touch with companies and experience what they are doing right away. Students are able to learn things, that are not taught in classes but will most certainly be part of their life after their studies. Other than that it is just a lot of fun and a possibility to get in touch with many different people.

What is my job at the OK?

As head of Symposium I’m in charge of the second day of VIScon. This means that I am responsible for all the amazing talks, the relations to the speakers and that all of you will learn many new and interesting things.

Why did I join the OK?

When I first heard of VIScon over a year ago, all I heard was HYPE. Unfortunately, at that time I didn’t get the hype and actually thought everyone just overplayed it. When October came around I decided to help out at VIScon, because I knew many people related to it. Even though it was quite stressfull, I found myself in an environment that I love - a big event with many people attending, lots of fun but also seriousness. At the end I was helping out much more than I had intended to and was richer of the knowledge about how amazing VIScon really is. At that time I realized I wanted to be a part of it. So here I am now.

My favorite thing about VIScon

Being in charge of quite a lot of budget, which hopefully enables us to realize an awesome event.

What is my job at the OK?

I’m responsible for finance and therefore am dealing with all parts of VIScon related to money. This includes coming up with a budget, as well as recording and controlling all expenses. After VIScon is over and everyone is celebrating, I will make sure that all debts are cleared and our bank account is tidied up. Hence, I’m the person that has to fill out a lot of invoices. Furthermore, I also support the entire VIScon team with any finance issues.

Why did I join the OK?

I was a helper at VIScon 2018 and really felt the hype.

My favorite thing about VIScon

…is that you get insights in completely different areas of computer science in a short period of time!

What is my job at the OK?

I make sure that the atmosphere is great by taking care of the decoration. We want you to see the hype so that everyone gets the VIScon feeling. And, of course, I am in charge of the goodies. We want every attendee to leave the building happily with some presents after a great day.

Why did I join the OK?

It is a big adventure to be part of such a great team organizing an even greater event!

My favorite thing about VIScon

I love the fact that VIScon has once merely been an extravagant idea coming from a handful of students and is now one of the biggest events organized by our student association.

What is my job at the OK?

I am the head of marketing and communication - meaning all things concerning public relations. I work with several different parties to ensure that various target audiences are made aware of this event. Furthermore, I try to keep you all up to date with posts on our website and I maintain all our social media channels.

Why did I join the OK?

It is a special opportunity to be a part of something big, get all kinds of different experiences and to do something for the benefit of hundreds of students interested in current technologies, industry and business.

What is my job at the OK?

I am responsible for the organizational part of the Hackathon. I coordinate the participants, the project ideas and stakeholders, as well as the mentors and prizes.

Why did I join the OK?

VIScon 2018 was a huge success, and as a helper I really fell in love with the atmosphere at the event. Now I am honored to contribute to VIScon 2019!

Aline Abler (Computer Science Msc, General Computer Science)

My favourite thing about VIScon

HYPE!

What is my job at the OK?

I manage the technical aspects of the hackathon - ensure the infrastructure is running reliably, every team has access to everything they need, and so on. I also provide a workshop for participants to prepare them for working on our infrastructure, and make sure a technical support team is available during the event to help with infrastructure issues and questions.

Why did I join the OK?

It’s something I’ve never done before and the VIScon is an amazing event - so I just went for it.

My favorite thing about VIScon

To be part of it.

What is my job at the OK?

I’m in charge of the helper coordination. This means, recruiting all necessary helpers and designing their shifts in collaboration with the other OK members. It also includes dealing with missing helpers, unexpected problems requiring additional helpers, as well as their accommodation and well-being in general.

Why did I join the OK?

It is a compleatly new and exciting experience for me and it is a great way to gain expertise in planning, coordination of workers and organizing a huge event, which cannot be taught in classes and one needs to experience firsthand. I joined this particular team because of the inspiring and motivated people I get to work with.

My favorite thing about VIScon

To see the fruits of the month long organisation.

What is my job at the OK?

I’m in charge of cadre helpers. This means recruiting all cadre helpers and making sure that they know all the important information they will need.

Why did I join the OK?

Last year I was a part of the cadre helper team and for this year, I wanted to introduce a new team of cadre helpers to the VIScon organisation.

Andreas Brombach (Computer Science Bsc. 8. Semester)

My favorite thing about VIScon

VIS offers a very large set of opportunities, services and benefits to its students. You can enjoy leisure events, get a peek at the job market from company visits, attend exam preparation workshops or learn invaluable social skills by becoming an active member in a committee or even at the executive board. At VIScon, all these benefits and opportunities are fused into one awesome, large event. From both attendee’s and organizator’s perspective, it offers so many things one can learn and profit from.

What is my job at the OK?

As this event takes place in an ETH building, uses ETH rooms and ETH equipment, I have to make sure we’re actually allowed to do so. I’m in charge of providing all the necessary infrastructure, ranging from a big tent to small details such as desk lamps for the hackathon support team. Therefore, I have to ensure that all my team members get access to all the rooms and material they need. Further, I will lead and coordinate the event’s set-up as well as the teardown.

Why did I join the OK?

Last year I was already part of the team that organized the very first VIScon. Although having organized only small events so far, I think I did an acceptable job, but there were still a lot of things that should be improved. After experiencing how countless hours of meetings, planning and preparations finally turned the initial idea into reality, I just couldn’t say no to another round

After participating in the hackathon in the first edition I couldn’t help but be part of this awesomeness and assist in making sure it is even more awesome the next time around.
